The health-care system in the Czech Republic is in transition. For Czechs and those with Czech health insurance, medical care is free. There are, however, a number of drawbacks - government funds for maintaining health-care facilities are low, and many physicians still earn less money than office workers - a holdover from the days of communism. Many doctors and nurses leave the profession after their required time of government service to seek higher paying jobs in the private sector. Nevertheless, the quality of health care in the Czech Republic is satisfactory in terms of world standards. A number of privately-funded clinics have opened which cater mostly to foreigners. Staff and physicians speak English and provide care based on Western-style models and charge Western-style fees. Private insurance may be accepted. There are also Western-trained doctors with private practices in Prague. The best way to find them is "word-of-mouth". They don't always accept insurance or credit cards. If it should be necessary with medical assistance, it is possible to receive good help in one of the following Czech clinics. It must be said that the standard varies from good to very bad. Although many of the doctors understand English, they do not have access to advanced diagnostically equipment as the doctors in the west might do. Nevertheless this is rapidly changing with the health system upgrading all the time. In case of acute help contact one of the following clinics, where you will find English speaking doctors.
Medical care is offered to foreigners staying in the Czech Republic: - free of charge, on the basis of international agreements, - without the need for cash payment, on the basis of health insurance - for cash
It is advisable to arrange sickness and accident insurance before the trip. Health facilities are usually open from 7:15--18:00, except Saturdays and Sundays, and also provide information about first aid services. All larger towns have doctors on duty 24 hours, also available on the phone. The opening hours of pharmacies correspond to those of other shops, and information about pharmacies opened all night and on weekends is posted up at every pharmacy.
